These groups (mainly Azov and Pravy Sektor) attacked several banks and damaged several ATMs, ranging up to the entrance of an Kiev branch of Sberbank, before barring the access with wire barbed wire and burning logs. They also put up posters urging people to withdraw their funds on the grounds that these banks were going to close. "Attention: The bank of the aggressor country will soon close. Withdraw your money as soon as possible."
These attacks also targeted the Russian Alfabank, which saw one of its branches in Kiev being stoned by Ukrainian radicals demonstrating in the square of Maidan to support the blockade of Donbass. Of course the Ukrainian police did not arrest anyone for all these acts of vandalism.
Unable to do anything against these Nazi groups that hold the real power in Ukraine at the moment, the Ukrainian authorities decided to follow the movement so as not to be overthrown, and to impose sanctions on Russian state banks established in Ukraine. The Ukrainian Central Bank is currently working on this issue with the help of the SBU (Ukrainian Secret Service) to determine what type of sanctions will be applied against the subsidiaries of certain Russian banks (including Sberbank, VTB and Prominvestbank).
The proposals of the Ukrainian central bank which have been published suggest that these banks should be forbidden to make international transfers. The Ukrainian subsidiary of Sberbank had already been obliged to lower the ceiling of withdrawal for its customers following pressure from the Kiev authorities.
This kind of announcement and these actions will cause a monstrous "bank run" on these banks. Clearly, the clients will all withdraw their money to put it elsewhere. This would cause the bankruptcy of these Ukrainian subsidiaries.
But what all these "geniuses" have not understood is that these banks are also an investment vehicle and that the banks are all linked together by claims or shares of capital. Sberbank is the 7th largest bank in Ukraine with more than $ 805 million in deposits and employs 2,000 people. Given the situation Sberbank leadership called on the Ukrainian authorities to stop the acts of vandalism and the attacks against its agencies, and to ensure the safety of its employees.
A situation that concerns Russia, as indicated by Dimitri Peskov, the press secretary of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Refusing to speculate on how the situation could evolve (or degenerate), he said that the Kremlin was following closely what is happening in Kiev, and recalled that this kind of action would not be without consequences for the the Ukrainian economy.
"We of course consider that this situation (with the Russian banks) completely destroys the investment climate in Ukraine. It shows the world that it is now very dangerous and economically inopportune to work in Ukrainian territory," said Peskov.
We could not have said it better. To summarize, this kind of action will not only sink the Ukrainian economy by discouraging anyone from investing in the country, but in addition the brutal fall of Sberbank and other Russian banks could precipitate the fall of the entire Ukrainian banking system by a domino effect. Because it is no small bank that would go bankrupt, but the 7th bank of the country, which has financial links with the other major Ukrainian banks.
And as if this was not enough in terms of destroying the image of the country, the Ukrainian authorities decided to add another layer of Russia-phobic stupidity, by declaring that the Russian Eurovision candidate could be denied entry into Ukrainian territory because of the fact that she sang in Crimea in 2015. Or how to end up torpedoing the reputation of the country worldwide by refusing a disabled singer...
Concerning the Donbass, as well as the actions against Russian banks, the Ukrainian authorities finally decided to support the blockade of the region, since they were unable to stop it, and are blocking, since this afternoon at 2 pm, any freight transport by road or rail to the DPR and the LPR until the enterprises placed under guardianship are returned.
A stupid blockade, which will not change the policy of the two popular republics, which have begun exporting their products to Russia, as Alexander Zakharchenko told a press conference. Worse, this blockade totally contradicts the Minsk-2 accords, but also common sense and human consciousness, as stated by Denis Puchilin and Sergei Lavrov.
Even the OSCE Special Representative in the contact groups, Martin Sajdik, expressed concern about this blockade saying that this dangerous development of the situation had to be stopped.
"I want to express my personal disappointment and concern about this situation which does not contribute to the success of the Minsk process but rather exacerbates the tension between the parties and has a negative effect on the process of mutual rapprochement and cooperation. This dangerous development must be stopped," he said after a meeting of the contact group.
Mr. Sajdik, like other sensible people, understands very well what scenario Ukraine is headed for, and especially the consequences for Ukraine's neighbors. If the most optimistic experts consider that this support for the blockade of the Donbass (which aims to de-radicalize it to prevent its use by the Nazi groups) will accelerate the organization of early elections in Ukraine, other experts, a little more realist, talk openly about the future collapse of the country.
Thus, Yevgeny Satanovsky, president of the Middle East Institute, considers that the Ukrainian authorities are now unable to keep the situation in the country under control because of their inability to manage the armed bands and subordinates of the governors.
"As far as Ukraine is concerned, I think it has already collapsed, but it has not yet realized that it has disintegrated. The government is unable to enforce the law and maintain order even in the capital. What kind of a country is that? It is an ex-country," he said.
When a country collapses, there is a strong temptation for authorities at bay to use war as a miracle solution. In attempting to raise the ante and the tensions with Russia, but also with the People's Republics of Donetsk and Lugansk, Ukraine has set itself on a dead-end road.
Once she has fully realized that she is cornered, then she will launch attacks in a final 'last stand' of honor before collapsing like a castle of cards.
When the Ukrainian enterprises were placed under the supervision of the DPR and the LPR, Alexander Zakharchenko gave Ukraine no more than 60 days to live. It seems that the Ukrainian authorities have decided, in their Russia-phobic hysteria, to do everything possible to realize this gloomy prediction.
