The State Department considers that those arrested during the unsanctioned opposition protests over the past couple of days, need to be freed, as stated by US State Department spokesperson Mark Toner.

“The arrest of non-violent protesters, human rights activists and journalists contravenes the basic principles of democratic values” – says Toner. The State Department similarly voiced its concern over the arrest of Alexey Navalny and police raids throughout NGOs which “work against corruption”. The United States will continue to monitor the situation. Toner has called on Moscow to immediately release all those arrested.

Protesters had gathered at rallies throughout various Russian cities, for which permits were not obtained from the cities’ authorities. [In Russia, the courts must give permission for any party to host civil action.] The organisers claim that the protests are for the purposes of “fighting corruption.” [Yet not acknowledging the often foreign sources of their funding.]

Around 500 individuals were arrested in Moscow, according to the police department. The prosecutor’s office had previously warned the public of the illegal nature of this event. The police had issues similar warnings to the organisers.

[This is not the first time Mr. Navalny has instigated his own arrest, being familiar with Russia's laws. It makes for great photographs.]
