The European Centre for the Study of Extremism in Cambridge (EuroCSE) held an international conference on Syria titled "Syria- Six Years On: From Destruction to Reconstruction", between 5th and 6th of April 2017.

The conference was aimed at promoting discussion between academics, psychologists, sociologists, economists, politicians and policy makers in order to properly address the crisis in Syria.

It also symbolized an important act of breaking the media silence on the Syrian issue, especially as regards the crimes of the terrorist groups, operating in Syria.

Among the participants were Dr. Rowan Williams, former Archbishop of Canterbury and a member of the House of Lords,
Lord Raymond Harvey, Baroness Caroline Cox, both of them also from the House of Lords, former Anglican archbishop in the Northern Ireland and the House of Lords member Robert Eames, former Ohio State senator and Democratic Party member Dennis Kucinich, Dr. Mohammad Nidal Shaar, former Syrian Minister of Economy, now living in Dubai, the current Iranian ambassador to the United Kingdom Hamid Baeidi Nejad, former British ambassador to Syria Peter Ford (2003 to 2006), former French ambassador to Sudan Michel Rimbaud, in addition to a number of academics who specialize in the study of terrorism and extremism and its psychological, social and cultural impact on the society. Syrian opposition figure, Dr. Wael Aji, also attended the conference.

Several other people were also scheduled to attend the conference, but were denied entry to the United Kingdom by the authorities. Among them were Syria's Grand Mufti Dr. Ahmad Badreddin Hassoun, the Patriarch of the of the Melkite Church Gregory III Laham, the Syrian Reconciliation Minister Ali Haidar, Syrian Minister of Tourism Bashir Riad Yazji, Bouthaina Shaaban, the political adviser to the Syrian president and Bashar Al Jaafari,  permanent Syrian representative to the United Nations.

The conference had a rather successful outcome, despite numerous attempts by the British authorities and the anti-Syria-leaning media to thwart it.
