US President Donald Trump assured full support to Egypt in its fight against terrorism during a Monday's meeting with his Egyptian counterpart, Abdel Fattah Al Sisi, in the White House.
For his part, Al Sisi announced support for Trump's strategy in the fight against terrorism.
According to a joint statement, both Trump and Sisi agreed on the importance of making progress in the peace processes in the Middle East, namely as regards Libya, Syria and Yemen, while also stressing the importance of achieving peace between Palestinians and Israelis.
The statement also said that they agreed that defeat of radical Islamism cannot be achieved by using the military force alone and that the Muslims all over the world shall be leaning towards the peaceful nature of Islam.
During the meeting, Trump said "We stand firmly behind Egypt, its people and its president Sisi, who has done a remarkable job in a very difficult position."
The meeting between Trump and Sisi was later followed by a separate meeting between the senior aides.
Trump sought to improve relations between the two countries that were strained under the presidency of the former US President Barack Obama. Trump assured full support to Sisi and pledged to work together in fighting the terrorist threat.
Despite this, Trump pointed that out that there are still some issues regarding Egypt that need to be improved and do not conform to the United Sates, namely its human rights record.
Monday’s visit was Sissi’s first official visit to the United States after he was elected as the President of Egypt back in 2014. The two presidents met for the first time in September 2016.
Abdel Fattah Al Sisi was also the first Arab leader to congratulate Donald Trump after he was elected as the US president.
