Russia has often been presented in the West as a barbaric country, in the tradition of the Mongol hordes. This is especially true of the Middle Ages – despite the fact numerous European monarchs engaged in family feuds for the throne, as well as commit murders and decapitations. In this outtake, Putin questions the ‘terribleness’ of Ivan the Terrible, but is careful not to paint him as a saint. He questions the validity of the legends about the Czar, pointing to the source, in all probability – the Catholic Pope’s Ambassador. In the same tradition, he says, Russia today is facing slander on behalf of the Western world, for the very practical reason that it is a capable competitor to the Western hegemony.
