Chairman of the American Joint Chiefs of Staff , General Joseph Dunford, said the Syrian authorities did not carry out attacks using chemical weapons back on the 4th of April in the Syrian town of Khan Sheikhoun.

The US general noted that Assad received warnings back in April that there would be consequences, should chemical weapons be used against civilians during counter-terrorism operations, adding that his government never used any of these weapons.

The latest comments come as a surprise, given that even back in June, the White House claimed that the Syrian government was gearing itself up for what was described as a “new attack by using chemical weapons.”

Damascus has repeatedly asserted that it no longer possesses any types of chemical weapons since its entire stock was destroyed back in 2014, under the auspices of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.

On the 4th of april, a “chemical attack” was reportedly carried out in the northwestern town of Khan Sheikhoun in Idleb province, currently held under occupation by Al Nusra Front-linked terrorist groups, known to be in possession of prohibited chemicals.

Despite lacking any evidence, The United States immediately blamed the Syrian government for the attack and carried out a missile strike against Syrian Army positions, particularly the Shayrat Air Base, 3 days later as an act of retaliation.

59 Tomahawk missiles were fired, out of which only 23 reached their targets. 9 civilians and 6 Syrian soldiers died because of the strikes.

Commenting on the role of Iran and Russia in Syria, the US general acknowledged that they are achieving some success in stabilizing the country, while also claiming the two will sooner or later become competitors because they have different visions, goals and objectives as regards Syria.
