The West "seeks to establish a hegemony" over the Middle East - Syria, together with Russia, oppose these attempts.

Such a statement was made today, on August 20, by Syrian President Bashar Assad, speaking to diplomatic staff in the Syrian Foreign Ministry.

Assad noted the assistance of Russia and Iran, which, he said, "have made a big contribution to the successful actions that the Syrian army is conducting against terrorists."

"We are proud of the weighty support that our friends and brothers are giving us in the fight against terrorism," he stressed.

"Iran from the very beginning  provided us with military and economic assistance," the president said. "Russia defended Syria in the Security Council, and then sent its armed forces, its soldiers died heroically on our land."

Assad promised that "in the history books, chapters will be written about the support of friends who helped Syria survive."

At the same time, the President separately dwelt on the fact that "he does not consider Turkey a partner and guarantor of any agreements".

"We do not trust the regime of Erdogan, who openly supported terrorist groups," he said. "Any Turkish presence in Syria is an occupation."

"Syrians have paid dearly for the failure of the conspiracy of the West and the Muslim brothers, but the price of resistance is less than the price of surrender," Assad concluded.
