US troops have exchanged fire with Turkish-backed Free Syrian Army militants in northern Syria, which has resulted in the US-led coalition making protests directly to Ankara.

The clash, which resulted in no casualties from either side, took place in the city of Manbij in Aleppo province, northern Syria.

The US-led Coalition spokesman Colonel Ryan Dillon confirmed the exchange of fire.

"Our forces did receive fire and return fire and then moved to a secure location," he explained by phone.

"The coalition has told Turkey that firing on US-led coalition forces is not acceptable," he emphasized.
