Iraqi forces have begun their process of liberating Tal Afar, the last major ISIS stronghold in Iraq.
On Tuesday morning, a spokesman for the Iraqi Ministry of Defense confirmed the launch of a major-scale operation, with both, air force and ground units participating.
According to an unnamed local source from the northern Iraqi province of Nineveh, six powerful explosions have already shook Tal Afar, itself located west of Mosul, amid reports that one of them hit an explosives manufacturing plant, with no information given on the killed terrorists or exact material damage as of yet.
The town of Tal Afar is the last remaining major ISIS stronghold in Iraq, and which came under control of the terrorist group back in the summer of 2014.
“The Iraqi Air Force has started its campaign to liberate the town of Tal Afar by carrying out intense strikes on positions and fortifications of ISIS terrorists”, the Iraqi Defense Ministry spokesman Mohammad Al Khudari said on Tuesday, adding that a joint coalition of the Iraqi forces, consisting of Iraqi Army, Federal Police and the Popular Mobilization Units, is awaiting the positive results of the airstrikes so that a ground invasion of the town can begin.
