"Ukrainian gas transportation system may become worthless by 2019"

By 2019 Ukrtransgaz may not have the technical ability to transit Russian gas to Europe due to a reduction in investments in the gas transportation system. This was stated by Minister of Energy and Coal Industry of Ukraine Igor Nasalik, TASS reports.

"I consider the policy of [Ukrainian] Naftogaz on the transport system to be heedless (regarding the reduction of investments in the GTS [Gas Transit System]). They have already erased it for themselves and do not look ahead as far as 2019. With such a position of Naftogaz, we can get to the point that Ukrtransgaz may not be technically ready to pump," said Nasalik.

"And the latest decisions that have been adopted, including in the US, on sanctions for Russia and Nord Stream-2, where this construction is blocked, focus specifically on the Ukrainian GTS," he added.

The Minister also stressed that the unpreparedness of the Ukrainian GTS for transit would lead to serious negative consequences.

Earlier it was reported that Gazprom had transferred some of the blue fuel from the Ukrainian direction to the OPAL pipeline, which receives gas from the Nord Stream.

Naftogaz of Ukraine earlier said that they are already ready to hand over the gas transmission system to the management of Europeans, if only they helped preserve the Russian transit.
