The UN is starting to admit the positive role of Iran in resolving the Yemeni crisis.
On Saturday, Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, UN's special envoy for Yemen, arrived in Tehran in order to attend talks with the Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and his deputy Hossein Jaberi Ansari.
The talks were mainly focused on latest developments in Yemen amid the UN’s search for a solution to end the ongoing crisis and thus prevent the humanitarian catastrophe from growing bigger.
During a press conference held after the meeting, Ansari announced Iran's support for the United Nations' efforts to resolve the Yemeni crisis, stressing that the organization should approach the crisis carefully and in a neutral manner in order to gain confidence among all parties involved.
He added that there is no military solution for the crisis in Yemen, stressing that the crisis should be resolved through negotiations and direct dialogue between the conflicting sides.
Ansari also expressed deep concern of Iran as regards proportions of humanitarian crisis in Yemen, noting that the main cause of worsening humanitarian situation and the spread of the unprecedented cholera epidemic lies within the siege imposed on Yemen by the Saudi-led Arab coalition.
For his part, Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed renewed his calls for the reopening of Sanaa International Airport in order to deliver humanitarian aid to Yemen, describing the move as necessary from the point of view of the United Nations.
The UN envoy expressed his high appreciation for the Iranian efforts in establishing peace and stability in Yemen, stressing once again that there is no military solution to end the crisis in the country.
