700 French nationals, about a third of them being women, and 500 of them adolescents, are reportedly living in ISIS-controlled areas in Iraq and Syria, French officials claim.
At least half of the children were born in France.
Over the past few years, hundreds of French citizens, predominantly of immigrant background, have gone on jihad to Iraq and Syria. About 200-300 of them were killed.
Like other European countries, France is concerned about how to deal with returnees from combat zones, given that majority of them pose a high security risk.
Back in August, the French Interior Minister Gerard Collomb said that 271 jihadists who had returned to France, were under investigation.
About 1,400 foreign-born women and children, belonging to the families of ISIS terrorists, are being held by Iraqi authorities in a private camp ever since the Iraqi Army expelled the terrorist group from Mosul back in July.
It is noteworthy that France was one of the countries that staunchly backed the Islamist uprising against the government of the Syrian President Bashar Al Assad.
