The Iraqi Parliament has unanimously rejected the forthcoming referendum on independence of the so-called “Kurdistan” region of northern Iraq.

During today’s session, members of the Iraqi Parliament have sent a clear message that they will not allow Iraq to become partitioned in any way by unanimously saying a “big no” to independent Kurdistan.

The session was attended by 204 out of parliament’s 328 members, a significant number of those absent being the Kurdish representatives.

The parliament has also authrotized the Iraqi Prime Minister to take all necessary measures to preserve the unity of Iraq, and begin a dialogue to resolve the open issues, namely as regards the issue of Kurdistan.

For September 24th, the ruling Barazani regime of Iraqi Kurdistan region is planning to hold a referendum on complete independence of the region. The move is, however, being opposed not only by Iraq and its neighbouring states, but Russia and the United States as well.
