South Korea's military announced on Wednesday that it was reviewing its live-action maneuvers, and for the first time tested Taurus, an advanced air-launched cruise missile, hoping it would boost Seoul's capabilities against North Korea, in the event of a possible war between the two neighbouring states.

The South Korean military said that the German-made Taurus missile was launched from the F-15 fighter jet and flew at a low altitude towards the target in the western coast of the country. The missile was capable of striking targets 500 kilometers away and reportedly has a special technique to avoid being detected by North Korean radars.

These maneuvers, which simulate a pre-emptive strike against North Korea, may result in an escalation of tensions in the region, with the current situation on the Korean peninsula closer than ever to the outbreak of a large-scale armed conflict.
