Turkey threatens to close Kurdish pipeline, announces it will conduct joint military exercises with Iraq - Like This Article

September 25, 2017 - Fort Russ News - Paul Antonopoulos

Neighboring states to the Kurdistan Regional Government in northern Iraq are taking rapid steps in light of the region conducting unconstitutional independence referendum today.

Earlier today, as reported by Fort Russ News, Iran and Turkey have closed their land borders with the region in response to the referendum.

However, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has now threatened to close the Ceyhan oil pipeline. This pipeline is the only means for Kurdish authorities to export oil it controls.

An independent Kurdistan would be landlocked and wholly reliant on either Iraq, Iran or Turkey to receive many imports and to export its oil. All three states are vehemently against Kurdish independence and have threatened to take significant action if such a declaration is made.

Meanwhile, Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim has revealed that Iraq and Turkey will conduct joint military drills in a move to tighten relations between Baghdad and Ankara.

"Iraq will participate in joint military exercises with the Turkish army," he said.
