Secretary-General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres has described the situation in Yemen as “catastrophic.”
He, however, confirmed that the discussions, aimed at reopening the port of Hodeidah and Sana'a’s international airport, as well as looking for ways to move on with political negotiations and put an end to currently the bloodiest conflict in the world, are currently going on.
“What we are doing in this regard through our special representative is to try to negotiate an agreement to reopen the port of Hodeidah and Sana'a airport to allow the entry of basic humanitarian aid to civilians who are living in highly difficult conditions. The situation in Yemen is catastrophic. We are trying to realize an agreement on aid delivery”, Guterres said.
“There are other things that should be discussed, however, we do believe that confidence-building measures should be built with a view, allowing for the resumption of effective political negotiations to end this conflict, which is one of the bloodiest ones of our time”, he added.
On September 5th, data published by the World Health Organization and the Yemeni Ministry of Health showed that the number of cholera cases in Yemen, since its outbreak in April, has reached 612,703.
Since March 2015, the Saudi-led Arab coalition is indiscriminately bombing the Middle East’s poorest country, killing thousands of civilians, majority of them being women and children, in the process.
