The Venezuelan government is about to reach an agreement with the rioting opposition, following weeks of consultations between representatives of the government and the opposition factions.
On Friday, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said the two sides were “very close” to ending the country's severe political crisis.
“We are very close to reaching an agreement”, Maduro said during a session.
“We have succeeded in re-establishing a negotiating table, necessary for peace, sovereignty and prosperity in Venezuela”, he added.
However, Venezuelan opposition does not share same sentiment as the president despite the fact that both parties agreed to set up a committee of “friendly countries” to help with ongoing negotiations, which will be sponsored by the Dominican Republic's president Danilo Medina, and former Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero.
Maduro insists that any negotiating sides must recognize the legitimacy of the recently voted Constituent Assembly, a thing that the opposition firmly rejects, claiming there will be no serious dialogue unless the government responds to its terms.
The US-sponsored opposition and its international backers both accuse Maduro of undermining democracy by attempting to control state institutions and seizing executive powers from the opposition-controlled parliament in an effort to counter global pressure that is calling for his resignation amid the severe economic crisis that has caused severe food and medical shortages, and which is also related to the foreign pressure.
It is noteworthy that majority of Venezuelan voters voted in favour of Maduro’s Constituent Assembly.
