“US does not recognize Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government's unilateral independence referendum”, the US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said on Friday.

The move comes as nothing surprising, as previously the US already expressed its opposition on holding a referendum which deeply violates Iraq's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

It is noteworthy that, at the moment, US is on good terms with the central government in Baghdad

For his part, Vahal Ali, spokesman for Masoud Barzani, the head of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), said KRG will declare independence unilaterally, should Baghdad refuses to remove aggressive stance towards it, adding that the province of Kurdistan will be forced to declare its independence in any case if Turkey decides to cut its access to the oil pipeline.

On Monday, KRG staged a referendum on secession of the Kurdistan province from Iraq.
The provincial authorities claim the referendum has since been supported by the majortiy of the voters.

With the exception of Israel, the entire international community was against the referendum.

On Wednesday, Iraqi Parliament announced 13 measures to tackle the referendum and authorized the Iraqi Prime Minister to dispatch Iraqi security forces to the Kurdistan province, should the latter indeed declare its independence.
