The Russian language was the reason for the banning of the classic theatre production "Anna Karenina", based on the novel of the same name by Leo Tolstoy, at the Staritsky stage in Khmelnitsky, Ukraine.
The director of the theatre, Vitaly Borisiuk, refused to conclude a lease contract under the pressure of local activists. "I am extremely negative about such decisions, because at the legislative level it is not forbidden to show Russian-language productions, nor is it written that artists should speak only in Ukrainian. " - he said.
"The prohibition of Leo Tolstoy in the original language in a theatre production is occurring at the same time as this original work is included in the school curriculum." - says actress Olga Sumskaya, who plays the role of Karenina, perplexed.
