The Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has announced the start of a military operation in the northwestern Syrian province of Idleb, aimed at “restoring stability and security”, the Turkish Hurriyet Daily reports.
“There is a serious operation going on in Idleb at the moment and will continue until further notice,” Erdogan said during the 26th semi-annual “consultation and assessment camp” of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) on Saturday, adding that the operation aims to restore Idleb’s security and stability.
The embattled Syrian province has, since last week of July, been under predominant control by the terrorist group Hay’at Tahrir Al Sham (ex-Al Nusra Front).
During his speech, Erdogan said that the operation in Idleb is the follow-up to the operation Euphrates Shield, which was launched on August 24th, 2016, under pretext of fighting against ISIS and the Kurdish separatist groups.
During that time, however, attacks on residential areas in the Syrian city of Aleppo were in a sharp increase.
“The FSA is currently carrying out the operation and our soldiers are not there,” Erdogan said after a journalist asked him whether the Turkish troops have entered the Syrian province of Idleb.
The name of the operation is yet to be announced.
