The defense team of Saakashvili, who has been deprived of his citizenship, asks the court to oblige the Main Directorate of the Ukraine Migration Service in the Lviv region to consider his application for asylum.
As one of Saakashvili's lawyers Markiyan Galabala noted, on September 11, Saakashvili personally applied to the State Migration Service to obtain the status of a person in need of additional protection.
"He applied with the appropriate application, applying for the status of a person in need of additional protection. No other statement was made by Saakashvili," Galabala said.
The defender clarified that the legal procedure for obtaining political asylum has a different terminology.
"It is the status of a person in need of additional protection, which is the legal name of this status and the legal name of this procedure," the lawyer added.
At the same time, the lawyer stressed that the migration service had to reply within 24 hours, but there was no reaction to the lawyer's requests. Saakashvili's defense intends to appeal their lack of action in court.
Recall that on September 5, Ukraine received an official request from Georgia to search for, take into custody, and extradite Saakashvili. Today it became known that Saakashvili's extradition will not take place, at least within the next few weeks.
On July 31, the Georgian Ministry of Justice expressed hope that with the return of former President Saakashvili to Ukraine, the authorities of the country could begin the process of returning him to Tbilisi.
Saakashvili illegally entered Ukraine on September 10. Following his return, a series of arrests of his supporters followed.
