Slovene President Borut Pahor has won the first round of the 2017 presidential election, gaining over 43% of the votes, according to the early preliminary results.
His closest rivals were Marjan Šarec (a comedy actor and the mayor of the town of Kamnik) who came in 2nd with approx. 27% of the votes and Romana Tomc (MEP) who ranked 3rd with approx. 15% of the votes.
According to the state election commission, the voter turnout was 32%.
Pahor, himself a social democrat, also used to be a prime minister in the past.
His foreign policy leans toward maintaining good relations with the fellow EU member states, the US and Russia.
Although he initially supported the adoption of the EU sanctions against Russia in the wake of Crimea referendum, he has nonetheless pushed for maintaining good ties with the country.
It is noteworthy that Russia and Slovenia have relatively strong economic relations.
Because none of the candidates gained more than 50% of the votes, there will be a second round.
