Washington and Seoul have agreed to expand rotational deployment of the US strategic military assets.

The defense ministers of South Korea and the United States agreed on Saturday to expand rotational deployment of U.S. strategic military assets in the Korean Peninsula in the wake of North Korea’s “threats.”

For South Korea, US strategic military assets usually mean advanced weapon systems such as bombers, aircraft carriers and nuclear-powered submarines.

The two sides stressed the need to continue to strengthen cooperation by staging  more military drills and strengthen joint capabilities amid preparation for possible “provocations” coming from the North Korean side.

Earlier, the Pentagon chief warned North Korea that it could expect a “massive military response” should it go ahead with the use of nuclear weapons, noting that its military capabilities are “ no match for US.”

“I cannot imagine a condition under which the United States can accept North Korea as a nuclear power”, Mattis said.

The US Defense Secretary noted the United States has many military options for North Korea left on table, though for now it will focus on supporting diplomatic efforts to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula and promoting deterrence.
