The Catalan ex-president Carles Puigdemont and four former ministers in his cabinet, have turned themselves to Belgian police, the Brussels prosecutor’s office has said.
Puigdemont and several of his associates traveled to Belgium right after Madrid took control of the autonomous region of Catalonia on October 31st, after Puigdemont and his government declared independence from Madrid.
He now faces charges for rebellion, sedition, misuse of public funds, disobedience and breach of trust, related to his separatist campaign.
If found guilty, he could spend up to 30 years in prison.
Previously, Puigdemont stated that he will not return to Spain, saying he will testify over his charges for pushing the Catalonia's independence from Brussels instead.
