MAIWAND, Afghanistan - Afghan security forces manned a checkpoint in Maiwand on Tuesday following a wave of Taliban attacks on government positions in restive Kandahar Province.
The Taliban-claimed attacks left at least 22 Afghan police officers dead following the overnight clashes.
At least 45 Taliban militants are though to have died in the fighting.
The US-led coalition occupied Afghanistan in 2001 and have failed to uproot to jihadist group. It is expected that when a full US withdrawal is underway that the Taliban will recapture most of the country.
