KIEV, Ukraine - Ukraine’s President Pyotr Poroshenko has announced that he will eliminate minority languages by forcing every child to learn Ukrainian with the new "On Education" law that was opposed by some European countries.
"Yes, we are protecting national minorities, but every Ukrainian will speak the Ukrainian language,"Poroshenko said.
"Starting from September, we adopted a new promising education reform that is not just improving, updating and making the educational process interactive and flexible," he said.
"The important thing is we are giving the Ukrainian speech back to Ukrainians," Poroshenko claimed.
Poroshenko signed the law on September 25. The law stipulates that the educational process can only be conducted in Ukrainian.
Until 2020, minority languages, including Russian, will be taught until the fifth grade. After that, the whole education process will be entirely Ukrainian-speaking starting from the first grade, TASS explained.
The law was criticized by Russia, Romania, Hungary Poland, Bulgaria and Greece.
