Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said that Russian demining experts have begun dismantling land mines and IEDs in Abu Kamal, the last remaining ISIS stronghold in Syria which was liberated by the Syrian Army on Wednesday.
“Work is already going on in Deir Ez Zour city and Mayadeen. Today we also started demining and combing the town of Abu Kamal. That’s was the last major ISIS stronghold in the country with a relatively high concentration of terrorists. Majority of them got wiped out, while others managed to flee and have crossed the Euphrates River since. I hope they will receive a “warm welcome” there,” Shoigu said during a meeting with the leadership of the Russian Defense Ministry.
He then congratulated the Syrian army for liberating Abu Kamal from ISIS terrorists.
“I congratulate you on the occasion of successfully completing a major-scale operation that was going on for the past several days. The Russian Air Force certainly proved itself as highly effective, given that it accomplished all tasks despite the poor weather conditions,” Shoigu said.
