US Partnering with Terrorists, Turkish Ambassador Says

WASHINGTON, May 22 - RIA Novosti, Tatiana Kalmykova. The Turkish Ambassador to the USA, Serdar Kilic, after Washington's decision to supply weapons to the Kurds, accused the US of establishing a partnership with the terrorist organization.

"I can hardly understand and accept the argument that the US should conduct an operation in Rakka using YPG forces (Syrian Kurds) because there is no alternative (to partners) on the ground." There is Turkey.

"And there's the Free Syrian Army that successfully conducted operations against Daesh.* You can not and should not use terrorist organizations in the fight against other terrorist organizations, especially when your partner tells you that this terrorist organization with which you established a partnership creates a permanent threat to safety and stability," he said, speaking at the annual conference on US-Turkish relations.

The Turkish diplomat wondered how they would feel in Washington, "if Turkey began to supply weapons to Al-Nusra* and conduct operations with them."

"The US-Turkey partnership is not a matter of choice, it's a matter of necessity, Turkey is one of the few functioning democracies in the region." None of the other countries in our region have been able to adapt and adhere to the universal values of freedom, democracy, human rights, market economies and the rule of law as successfully as Turkey, this is what distinguishes Turkey from other partners and allies of the United States," the Turkish diplomat believes.

Kilic said that "Turkey has destroyed more than 3 thousand ISIS fighters together with the forces of the Free Syrian Army," and "more than 60,000 Syrian refugees have already returned to their homes in the areas liberated from Daesh."

Negotiations of US President Donald Trump with Erdogan took place in Washington last week amid the contradictions aggravated between the two countries by the recent decision of the US president to supply weapons to the Syrian Kurds fighting against the terrorist group Islamic State. Turkey's official position is that Kurdish groups in Syria are linked to the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), banned in Turkey, and which both Ankara and Washington consider terrorist.
