On the anniversary of the Georgian conflict, Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Abkhazia, where he met with the head of the republic Raul Khajimba.

As reported by RIA Novosti, the talks were held in the former Soviet state dacha.

"We have things to talk about, but the most important thing is that we have a special, very special relationship with Abkhazia, and we are confidently guaranteeing Abkhazia's security and independence. I am confident that this will continue," Putin said at a meeting with Khadzhimba , adding that now it is only necessary to find the optimal ways to develop Abkhazia's economy.

Putin also said that he counts on the joint work of the security agencies of the two countries to ensure the safety of tourists in the country. He recalled the agreements on the organization of the information/coordination center of the internal affairs of the two countries.

"I mean that the citizens of Abkhazia, Russians and guests, wherever they come from, including from Russia, should understand and feel that they are under reliable protection," the Russian president said.

"I very much, hope and expect that this joint work will raise the level of safety of the tourists staying here," he added.

This is not the first visit of the Russian leader to the republic. Vladimir Putin was in Abkhazia in August 2009, then in 2011 he came to the funeral of the president of Abkhazia Sergei Bagapsh, and then visited the republic in 2013.

At present there are over 200 joint Russian-Abkhaz enterprises here. Cooperation mainly continues in the areas of communication, tourism, fuel and energy complex and construction.

Enterprises receive benefits in the form of exemption from taxes on profits and property. In 2016, the trade turnover amounted to 248 294.9 thousand dollars, in January-March this year - 45.1 million dollars (an increase of 6.5%).

We recall, nine years ago in the region a five-day war started as a result of the Georgian aggression against South Ossetia: on the night of August 8, 2008, Georgian artillery inflicted a massive artillery strike on the capital of South Ossetia Tskhinvali. Then Russia stood up for the protection of civilians, and on August 26 recognized the independence of the two recognized republics, Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
