A Russian priest has held a prayer for the souls of the fallen martyrs at the headquarters of the Christian branch of the National Defense Force (NDF) in the town of Mahardah, located in the Syrian province of Hama.

The town is predominantly inhabited by the Christians.

Formed in 2012, National Defence Forces (NDF) is Syria’s largest paramilitary group, consisting of many volunteers, helping the Syrian Army and its allies in fighting off the terrorists.
The ties between Syria and Russia are not close only because of the fact that both countries are long-term strategic and political allies.

The Eastern Orthodox Church is what further connects the two.

In both countries, the Orthodox Church has played a highly positive role in motivating citizens and their armed forces in struggle against terrorism.

About 10% of all Syrians are Christians. Majority of them follow the Orthodox Church.
