The US Justice Department has demanded from RT America to register as a foreign agent by Monday.
"If the company does not obey, its manager can be arrested, as well as all of the company's accounts frozen" said the US authorities.
RT Editor-in-Chief Margarita Simonyan called the establishment of such a term "cannibalistic deadline". "Do you feel how free it is?" - she wrote on Twitter .
The head of the commission of the Council on the Protection of State Sovereignty, Andrey Klimov, noted that to mirror an answer, it may be necessary to make changes in the legislation. It is necessary to create the same working conditions for US media in Russia within the legal framework.
Member of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, Vadim Dengin, believes that it is not worth taking retaliatory measures, as they will not be effective. He added that Washington's actions once again prove its inability to "build a qualitative dialogue."
In November, it was reported that RT lawyers provided the US Justice Department with a large amount of evidence explaining why the channel should not be listed as a foreign agent.
Recently, the United States has been trying to complicate the work of the television channel as much as possible. In addition to being ordered to register as an agent, the Congress held a hearing on the possible "influence of RT through social networks during the presidential elections" in the US in 2016. In October, Twitter blocked all advertising from RT and Sputnik.
The Russian authorities have repeatedly expressed their support for the television channel, and also stated that retaliatory measures can be taken against the United States.
According to Simonyan, RT does not experience such pressure, as in the US, in any country. She also said that, in the worst case scenario, the company would leave America.
It isn't clear why the likes of CNN, BBC, Echo Moscow, Voice of America - or any other publication that operates on US and Western funds - is not being shown the same disrespect in Russia, on behalf of the decisiveness of state authorities.
