Andrei Karlov, Russia’s ambassador to Turkey, has been shot in the Turkish capital of Ankara. He was at an art exhibition when the shooting occurred, Russian embassy sources have confirmed to global news outlets, adding that they believed the shooter is connected with radical Islamist groups. 

During a speech he was making at a painting exhibition in the Turkish capital, the assailant shot the ambassador, hitting him in the back and injuring several other bystanders. All this, only a day before Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu is to head to Moscow for talks on Syria with his Russian and Iranian counterparts. 

Reports coming in from various global sources indicate that Karlov is in critical condition. It is not known at this publication time if he is expected to live.
