Moscow. The Russian state-owned company Gazprom reports that last year, according to its own data, more gas was exported to Germany than ever before. In 2016 about 49.8 billion cubic meters of gas were delivered to Germany.

Since the beginning of the year, almost 21 percent more gas had been delivered via the Nord Stream pipeline than in the same period in the previous year.

CEO Alexei Miller also said that this is a record result.

From 2019 onwards, the Nord Stream 2 Eastern Sea pipeline is to be used to pump gas from Russia to Germany. The pipeline will supplement the existing Nord Stream 1.

The construction is supported by major energy groups, including the German companies Wintershall - a subsidiary of BASF - and the Eon spin-off Uniper. Many Eastern European countries are sceptical about the project, and feel they have been bypassed. Critics warn of increasing dependence on Russian gas.
