A trial for the so-called “refugee” from Syria began yesterday in the Austrian city of Innsbruck. The 27-year-old is accused of murdering at least 20 wounded or unarmed Syrian soldiers in the city of Homs and the nearby viilage of Al Khaldiyya, back in 2013 and 2014.

The man was allegedly a member of the now defunct Al Faruq Brigade, a terrorist group associated with the so-called “Free Syrian Army”.

According to the prosecutor’s statement the man is not being trialed for being involved in terrorism, but rather for murdering “enemy soldiers”. In the past, however, the Austrian authorities have arrested and imprisoned people for being members of the terrorist groups.

The man is believed to have illegally arrived in Austria through the Balkan migrant route in the Fall of 2015.

He was arrested along with the 2 Iraqi migrants, aged 19 and 28, back in June 2016.

The accused first admitted the accusations, but later refused to confess and claimed that he did not understand the translation correctly. The man said that by the time of when the killings allegedly took place he was no longer in Syria as he had gone to Turkey. One witness, however, recalled seeing the man as a terrorist fighter in Syria. If found guilty, the man could be sentenced to life imprisonment.

Due to the accused’s health issues, the trial will not continue until March 28th.
