A source close to the Syrian Foreign Ministry confirmed that the Iraqi raids on Syrian territory took place in coordination with Damascus.

The raids were carried out, following the high-level intelligence coordination between Iraq and Syria. The success is believed to have paved way for further cooperation.

The operation targeted ISIS positions in Abu Kamal, located in the Syria’s eastern Deir Ez Zour province. Additional raids were also made in the Iraqi border town of Al Husaybah.

According to a statement issued on Friday "The Iraqi Air Force F - 16 jets passed in to the Syrian territory and destroyed enemy targets in the Abu Kamal area."

The Iraqi airstrikes on Syrian territory are said to have been approved by the Iraqi prime minister Haider Al Abadi who vowed to destroy ISIS terrorists wherever they emerge.

Abadi stated that this is " the last chance for terrorists involved in ISIS to lay down their weapons and surrender in order to receive the fair trial, otherwise certain death will be inevitable ."
He also congratulated the people of Iraq for the victories of their military, particularly those in the Eastern part of Mosul that were part of the operation dubbed "We're coming for you, Nineveh" and called for further attempts to be made against ISIS in order to get rid of Iraq’s main terrorism problem permanently.
