Earlier on Sunday, units of the Dutch riot police clashed with Turkish extremists and Erdogan supporters.

The riots erupted, following the decision of the Dutch government to bar two turkish government ministers from attending a pro-Erdogan regime rally in Rotterdam, namely Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, Turkey's Foreign Affairs Minister and Fatma Betul Sayan Kaya, the Family Affairs Minister of Turkey. While the former was not even allowed to enter the country, the latter was escorted by the police back to the German border, before even reaching the Turkish consulate building in Rotterdam, where a pro-Erdogan regime rally was supposed to take place.

Shortly before the clashes broke out, some 2000 protesters had gathered outside the building of the Turkish consulate in Rotterdam, Netherlands. It was said the purpose of the gathering was to express support for Erdogan and his regime in the wake of a forthcoming constitutional referendum that could result in significant expansion of Erdogan’s political powers. Right after midnight, the riot police units (some of them riding on horseback) began to disperse the crowd members away from the consulate building.

Ahmed Aboutaleb, the mayor of Rotterdam, said the Turkish consulate did not inform the authorities about organizing the event and that, according to the official announcements by the consulate, nothing was scheduled for that day.
In a statement, issued by the Dutch prime minister Mark Rutte earlier on Sunday, it was said the behaviour of the two Turkish ministers is “irresponsible” and the responses from the government in Ankara are “unacceptable”.

The Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan and members of his regime have since responded to the actions of the Dutch government and accused the Dutch side of tyranny, disrespect for international law and unlawful treatment of the Turkish diplomats. Some,
Mehmet Chavushoglu (who himself displayed islamist and ultra-nationalist gestures during pro-Erdogan regime rally in Hamburg, Germany earlier this week) including, even went that far to compare their actions to those of the Nazis.

A Dutch flag was reportedly taken down from the consulate building by pro-Erdogan regime protesters in Istanbul, Turkey on Sunday. The flag is said to have been replaced with the Turkish one.
