“Syria could retaliate against Israel by firing SCUD missiles, should the latter strike Syria one more time” said the message that was delivered through the Russian mediators.

The message further stated that should Israel raid Syria, Syria would immediately respond by targeting Israeli soil and more precisely the Haifa port and petrochemical plant as well as the military bases, without any prior notice. 

The announcement comes in the wake of the March 17th incident when four Israeli jets violated the Syrian airspace and targeted Syrian army positions in the surrounding areas of Palmyra, close to the Lebanese borders. The Syrian defense systems are said to have immediately responded and shot down one Israeli jet and hit another one, forcing other two jets to retreat. 

"Syria's forceful response to the Israeli attacks changed the rules of the game”, Bashar Al Jaafari, Syrian Ambassador to the UN, was quoted saying.

Over the past few years, Israel violated Syrian airspace and hit Syrian army positions several times, mostly in the surrounding areas of Damascus. According to the statements from the Syrian government, “Israeli actions only benefit the terrorists, operating in the surrounding areas of Damascus, as they are disrupting Syrian army’s fight against terrorism”.

It is believed that Syria has some 800 of the Soviet-made SCUD missiles.
