Former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad made an official decision to run for the president in the upcoming round of the presidential elections, scheduled to take place on the 19th of May.

Ahmadinejad already arrived at the Election Commission headquarters in Tehran in order to register his name as a candidate in the upcoming presidential elections. His former deputy Hamid Reza Baghaee is also running for the presidency. 

It is noteworthy that Ahmadinejad is the sixth president of the Islamic Republic of Iran and took up his duties on August 3rd 2005, after beating his rival Hashemi Rafsanjani in the second round of the presidential elections. He was later re-elected on June 12th, 2009, upon defeating his rival Mir Hossein Mousavi. Initially, the elections sparked some controversy, however, Ahmadinejad remained president until the end of his mandate that finished on June 15th, 2013. 

Since Tuesday, the Iranian Election Commission is leaving its door open for the period of five days, during which the citizens will be able to register their names as candidates in the upcoming round of the presidential elections. According to the data from the Iranian Ministry of Internal Affairs, 126 citizens have so far registered their names, 6 women including.
