The US Congress has approved the imposition of new sanctions against North Korea, Iran and Russia.

The decision of the Senate was almost unanimous - 98 people supported the bill, two voted against.

The document should shortly receive the approval of US President Donald Trump. He also has the right to veto.

"The United States of America must send a powerful signal (to Russian President) Vladimir Putin <...> that we will not tolerate attacks on our democracy," Senator John McCain said before the vote.

The new sanctions are the most far reaching since early 2014, if Trump approves them.

Restrictive measures will affect the banking sector in Russia, a number of deep-water and Arctic offshore projects will also be revised: the bill provides for a ban on the supply of equipment.

Some restrictive measures are aimed at countering the construction of the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline. European companies cooperating on the project with Russia will face penalties.

The White House expressed readiness to introduce these new sanctions.

The Kremlin has reacted negatively to the possible introduction of new sanctions by Washington and believe that the adoption of the bill will lead to the deterioration of relations between Russia and the United States.

The bill also makes it difficult for President Trump to repeal the sanctions, by tying them together with those of Iran and having to seek permission of Congress in the future on any changes.
