Experts from Slovenia’s Civil Protection Units have managed to successfully dispose a 250 kg US bomb, dating back to the Second World War.
The bomb was first discovered by one of the locals at Castle Vurberk, located in the vicinity of Maribor, Slovenia’s second largest city.
The man brought the bomb to his own backyard. Although he later informed the authorities, he will nonetheless be charged due to acting negligently and potentially causing a mass public danger as a lot of people could have been killed, had the bomb gone off.
Regarding the whole neutralization process, which began following the evacuation of 465 people living nearby – the bomb was first lifted from the man’s backyard and then transported, using a special type of cable car to a nearby cave where everything has already been prepared for the bomb's destruction, with transport itself being tested prior to making the real move. The transport was constantly monitored.
The bomb, which contained TNT, was later successfully disposed. Although small remains of TNT can still be found in what was left of the bomb, following the explosion, they are said not to be dangerous and will be destroyed later.
The total costs of intervention and disposal of the bomb are estimated to be between 15,000 – 20,000 Euros and will be covered by the state.
This was also the first such case in Slovenia.
It is noteworthy that during the Second World War, the northeastern city of Maribor and its surrounding areas became targets of intense bombardment, conducted by Allies.
