Iraqi officials in a statement made on Friday, announced the discovery of two mass graves containing the bodies of 500 people close to an ISIS prison near Mosul in northern Iraq.
The Media Cell Security Investigation team said one grave near the Badoush Prison contained the bodies of 470 inmates and the second with 30 bodies.
In speaking on the condition of anonymity, a security official revealed that the majority of the victims were either Shia Muslims or belonging to other minority groups in the city such as the Yazidis and Christians.
Iraqi forces defeated and expelled ISIS from the city of Mosul in the middle of last month after an operation dubbed "We are coming, Nineveh" took just under nine months to conclude.
