The terrorist group ISIS today issued a statement, claiming responsibility for yesterday’s terror attack that targeted the police headquarters in Al Midan district in central Damascus.
The double suicide attack resulted in the deaths of 17 policemen and civilians. More than 20 people were wounded.
The attack was carried out by three gunmen armed with machine guns and hand grenades. Two gunmen entered the police headquarters where they clashed with members of police force, before blowing themselves up. The third gunman blew himself up outside the building, targeting police reinforcements.
The Syrian Interior Ministry said that terrorists blew themselves up in front of the police headquarters, killing a number of civilians and police officers.
Since the beginning of the Syrian war, the terrorists struck Damascus multiple times, usually in time when they were dealing with severe losses inflicted upon them by the Syrian Army.
In December 2016, a police station in Damascus was also targeted by the suicide bomber, and who was later revealed to be a 9-year-old girl named Fatima.
Carrying explosive belt, she was sent into action by no other than her own father Abdul Rahman Shaddad, also known as “Abu Nimr.”
He was killed several days later after Syrian Forces carried out an operation against the positions of Fatah Al Sham (Al Nusra Front).
“Due to continued victories of the Syrian Armed Forces, the terrorists are stepping up their activities”, Syrian Interior Minister Mohammed Al Shaar said on Tuesday.
“The Syrian nation is standing by its leadership and its Army. We will not allow the terrorists to target components of our establishment that greatly help to fight the terrorism problem and address the daily needs of our people. Any terror attacks will not delay our victories, they will only encourage us to carry out more counter-terrorism operations”, he added.
