Anyone who knows Russia and its history, can not seriously believe in the effectiveness of sanctions against it. This opinion was expressed by the co-chairman of the Left Party in the Bundestag, Dietmar Bartsch, in an interview published Sunday with the newspaper Bild am Sonntag. He answered the questions of writer Vladimir Kaminer in the series "Stars Meet with Leading Politicians."

Bartsch stressed that the Left Party adheres to a "differentiated and critical view" of the events taking place in Russia. "What I think is wrong is the policy of the German government when it believes that it is possible effect anything through sanctions," he said.

"This is absurd. Anyone who is familiar with Russia and knows that there, during World War II millions of people died of hunger and thirst, can not seriously believe that one can force such a country to its knees through these ridiculous sanctions."

According to Bartsch, the sanctions of the West only lead to the fact that Russians rely even more on the country's leadership.
