Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Wednesday that crisis in Venezuela needs to be resolved peacefully and without any external interference.
Lavrov's statement comes in the wake of Trump’s threats about a possible military intervention against Venezuela, prompting its President Nicolas Maduro to call for a mass military drill.
“It’s important to stress our position on the situation in Venezuela,” Lavrov said at a press conference with his Bolivian counterpart.
“We are united in the need to overcome the existing differences in the country through peaceful means, such as the wider-scale national dialogue without any external pressure. It is unacceptable to start a military intervention to solve the internal affairs of this country.”
The Venezuelan president has confirmed his country's determination to counter any aggression by the United States, in response to Trump's indications on a possible use of force against the country.
“Venezuela cannot be intimidated, Mr. Trump!”, Maduro said on Monday, adding that he had ordered large-scale military maneuvers to begin later this month in order to assure readiness of the Venezuelan armed forces to defend the country.
