Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Wednesday that a group of Russian military commanders will soon arrive in Turkey to discuss the situation in the northwestern Syrian province of Idleb, which is currently occupied by the terrorist group Hay’at Tahrir Al Sham (ex-Al Nusra Front).
“Russia has more understanding of Turkish position on the issue of the Kurdish separatists in Syria than the United States”, Cavusoglu said in an interview with TRT News Channel.
Washington provides the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) with weapons and equipment, a thing that poses a grave concern for Turkey who sees YPG as an extension of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), and whose insurgency begun back in the 1980s in the Turkish southeast .
Cavusoglu also warned about the negative consequences of the forthcoming referendum on independence of the Iraqi Kurdistan province, stressing that holding such referendums might significantly worsen the situation in the region and could even escalate to a new “civil war.”
The leadership of the so-called “Kurdistan” province of Iraq said it will hold a referendum on Kurdistan’s independence on September 25th, ignoring all international warnings, including those from Turkey, United States of America and Iran.
