NATO believes that the visit by Russian President Vladimir Putin to Abkhazia harms efforts to resolve the situation, and regrets that the visit took place without Georgia's prior consent.
This was stated by the acting official representative of the North Atlantic Alliance Dylan White.
"The visit of President Putin to the Georgian region, Abkhazia, on the ninth anniversary of the armed conflict of the Russian - Georgian war, is detrimental to international efforts to find a peaceful solution through negotiations," White said.
Georgia on the night of August 8, 2008, fired from the South rocket launcher "Grad"at South Ossetia, when Georgian troops attacked the republic and destroyed part of its capital Tskhinvali. Russia, defending the inhabitants of South Ossetia, many of whom took Russian citizenship, sent troops into the republic and after five days of fighting pushed out the Georgian military.
After the "five-day war" in August 2008, Russia recognized the sovereignty of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, formerly part of Georgia. Russian leaders have repeatedly stated that this decision is not subject to revision. In response, Tbilisi severed diplomatic relations with Moscow.
This is Putin's first visit to Abkhazia since the end of August 2013.
"We have something to talk about, but the most important thing is that we have a special, very special relationship with Abkhazia. We reliably guarantee the security and independence of Abkhazia, and its independence. I am confident that this will continue," the Russian president said.
