20 months after Qatar recalled its ambassador from Iran because of demonstrations held in front of the Saudi embassy in Tehran, Doha has said that it will return its ambassador to the Gulf state.
"Qatar announced that its ambassador to Tehran will return to resume his diplomatic duties," said the Qatari Foreign Ministry's information office in a statement posted on its website on Wednesday.
The demonstrations were sparked by Saudi Arabia's violent crackdown on Shia Muslims in the puritanical kingdom and the execution of the prominent cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr.
The ambassador's return to Iran comes as Qater remains virtually isolated in the Gulf region after Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and even Egypt cut diplomatic ties with Doha in early June on the basis the country was sponsoring terrorism.
