The Russian Defense Ministry yesterday announced that the Syrian Army, while supported by the Russian Air Force, eliminated the largest gathering of ISIS terrorists near the village of Ghanim Ali in the eastern countryside of Raqqah province.
In its Sunday statement, the Russian Defense Ministry said that the Syrian forces managed to annihilate more than 800 terrorists, in addition to destruction of 13 tanks, 39 heavy machine-gun-equipped vehicles and 9 mortars.
The statement added that particular operation resulted in destruction of the largest gathering of ISIS terrorists in the region, especially in terms of arms and equipment, noting that that the Tiger Forces, a special forces unit led by Brigadier Suhail Hassan Al Nimr, continue at high altitudes along the eastern bank of the Euphrates River, in order to lift the ISIS siege of Deir Ez Zour province.
It is noteworthy that the eastern Syrian province of Deir Ez Zour remains the largest stronghold of ISIS Syria.
The Syrian military leadership has since launched a large-scale campaign to completely liberate it from ISIS, namely after its forces achieved great successes in the provinces of Homs and Raqqa.
The Russian Defense Ministry noted importance of ongoing campaign in Deir Ez Zour, stressing that the liberation of the province would mean a strategic defeat for ISIS in Syria.
