In Austria, the official burka ban will come into effect on October 1st.
First reactions from abroad were already triggered: Earlier, the Embassy of the Sultanate of Oman in Vienna warned its citizens about the new Austrian law that prohibits full facial veiling. The Omani newspaper “Times of Oman” also reported on the matter.
The warning of the Embassy and the attention paid to the issue, come as a surprise because the Sultanate of Oman is otherwise considered to be relatively moderate as there is no obligatory veiling for women in the country.
On Friday, the Austrian Foreign Ministry provided domestic diplomatic missions with all relevant information regarding the new law that is about to come in effect.
The Austrian Interior Minister Wolfgang Sobotka also reminded that the burka ban is coming into effect, stressing that there will be no “grace period.”
He noted the new law is aimed against anyone who hides or covers his face in public through clothing or other types of veiling.
Individuals not complying with the law, will be subjected to pay up to a €150 fine.
