"The new Law on Education, adopted by the Verkhovna Rada, will lead to the abolition of the education system in the native language for ethno-cultural minorities in Ukraine."

I am concerned about the fate of the wide community of Romanians and Moldovans living in Ukraine.

One of the main tasks of democracy is the protection of the rights of ethnic minorities, tolerance of the culture and traditions of compatriots, and respect for their desire to educate children in their native language.

The vast majority of polyethnic and multicultural countries are striving to enforce these rights. In this regard, I am concerned about the situation of the large community of Romanians and Moldovans living in Ukraine, the community that is currently at risk of being denationalized due to the unfair law introduced in Kiev.

The new Law on Education, adopted by the Verkhovna Rada, will lead to the abolition of the education system in the native language for ethno-cultural minorities in Ukraine. There have already been a huge number of reactions from Romanians and Moldovans living in Ukraine, as well as from other ethnic groups who ask for help from neighboring countries and international organizations, and urge them to react immediately.
I understand their concerns and, as the President of the Republic of Moldova, I appeal to the Kiev authorities to reconsider their new policy towards ethno-cultural minorities. I remind them that in Moldova the rights of the Ukrainian community are respected.
Here, we have a whole range of schools with teaching in Ukrainian. I call for a constructive and reciprocal approach on the part of the neighboring state.
I very much hope that the current political leadership in Kiev is aware of the negative consequences of this law and will take appropriate steps to abandon it. I count on the wise decision of my Ukrainian colleagues for the sake of good interethnic relations in Ukraine, and also in the name of good relations with the states whose diasporas live in the territory of Ukraine.
